SHAPE AI: building an AI Bill of Rights for higher education
The situation
National Student Legal Defense Network (opens in a new tab) (Student Defense) saw uncertainty on the horizon with AI entering the realm of higher education, and wanted to get ahead of the potential impact.
What we did
Spearheaded the first phase of the initiative, helped bring in additional consultants, partnered to host a convening, and helped shape a Student AI Bill of Rights (opens in a new tab).
Outcome
Working closely with Student Defense and its partners, we helped the initiative win $500K in its first tranche of funding from Humanity AI (opens in a new tab), a pooled fund of philanthropies. Student Defense has since published guidance on AI in admissions and a flagship report, Students at Stake (opens in a new tab), on the risks of AI in higher education. Student Defense launched the report at a Capitol Hill briefing (opens in a new tab) on September 17, 2026, featuring Sen. Andy Kim and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici. Inside Higher Ed covered both the Bill of Rights (opens in a new tab) and the report (opens in a new tab).
Economic Security & Poverty · Labor & Workers
Presenting an economic security roadmap
The situation
David Riemer, Senior Fellow at Community Advocates, had developed a roadmap for economic security (opens in a new tab) and wanted national policy audiences to engage with it. Urban Institute modeling estimated the seven-part, work-based policy package would increase employment by nearly 7 million, raise earnings by over $300 billion, dramatically reduce SPM poverty by over 70%, and grow the middle class by more than 50 million.
What we did
Introduced the roadmap to policy experts, advocates, and policymakers, gathered their reactions, and advised on how to position it.
Outcome
Working together, we got the roadmap in front of a wide range of policy experts, think tanks, advocates, and Capitol Hill staff who hadn’t seen it. It’s now being drafted into policy, with national polling by Morning Consult showing bipartisan support for each component.
Social Insurance & Public Benefits · Child & Family Policy
Policy advising for a national organizing leader
The situation
Community Change’s leadership wanted a senior policy advisor on call to help navigate fast-moving social and economic policy debates and a shifting political landscape.
What we did
Provided ongoing policy advising, facilitating valuable relationships, filling in where needed for a principal, and connecting the priorities of grassroots organizing with policy expertise and relationships in Washington.
Outcome
Policy input, developed in close collaboration with Community Change’s team, that has helped extend and enhance its own work on leadership memos, board remarks, and messaging, from the 2025 fight over Medicaid and federal budget cuts to its child care organizing. Working together, we’ve also made Community Change a highly active voice at a national table of progressive organizations working on how the next administration should govern.
